“In Rrrrussia, vee have proverb: Only bad soldiers don’t vant to be general,”[1] was Sasha Pivovarova’s reply to Vogue when asked, in May 2007, if she wanted to be a supermodel.
By that time she was one. Fragile-looking, with a heart-shaped face and arresting blue eyes, this rather intellectual Muscovite had taken the industry by storm when she emerged in 2005 with her trademark stomping gait and—her words—“stare of the sniper”[2] (inspired not by Zoolander, but, as she told Interview magazine, “the physical drama in silent films”).[3] Only two weeks before making her runway debut at Prada—while simultaneously learning how to walk in heels - she had been an unknown student of art history at the Russian State University for the Humanities. Her boyfriend (now husband) submitted her photographs to IMG, one of the world’s top agencies and, as befitted her commando style, she shot straight to the top. From 2005 to 2008 she starred in six consecutive ad campaigns for the pace-setting Italian megabrand.
By 2008, she was so much in demand that she could boast of having boarded planes 168 times in one year. Meanwhile, she kept her love of art alive by drawing and painting, often filling the pages of her leather-bound portfolio backstage at shows. “When I don’t have a pencil, I’ll use tea, coffee, water, or milk to do my drawings,”[4] she said. Her work, usually portraits (sometimes of fellow models), has been exhibited in Paris and New York and collected by Karl Lagerfeld, among others.
Perhaps it’s her artist’s eye that allows Pivovarova to be such a convincing changeling. For Vogue she has channeled her inner Sarah Bernhardt to bring to life a colorful cast of characters, from a romantic Silk Road nomad for lensman Irving Penn in September 2006 to a forties femme fatale for Steven Meisel’s “In the Mood” shoot for September 2009. Her most joyous turn for the magazine, however, was probably the re-creation of her wedding, complete with extended family and model cohorts, in June 2009.
