Movies to dream about // New releases I love!
Per a request I thought it about time to update my movie list, especially since it's Sunday! Get ready for a major marathon because these are all such dreamy films. I'm also including a list of movies on my watch list that I haven't seen yet, so if you watch them before or have seen them, please review them in the comments!! I'd love to hear your thoughts on some of these recommendations, I find them all gripping, romantic and beautifully filmed.
The Clouds of Sils Maria Dramatic, poignant, funny and feminine. Perfect to watch with anyone in your life! This movie made me fall in love with Kristen Stewart, who almost outshines the incredible Juliette Binoche. The interviews with Kristen about this movie are amazing also, I highly recommend a read!
The overnight Weird, hilarious, engaging and romantic, this movie is incredibly unpredictable and will have you wishing you were friends with this hipster couple in Silverlake (Jason Schwartzman really delivers) my boyfriend and I watched this with mouths agape, unprepared for the almost shocking story line. It's a super feel good film perfect for a night in with someone you are dating or your friends.
Wild Tales Action packed revenge fantasy shorts that will have you smiling and gripping your seat. My Dad made me watch this when he was in town, he's obsessed with it. It's quite violent and very funny, like Kill Bill but more realistically fantastical. Needless to say I loved it... watch this with a guy, your Dad, or maybe a date you want to impress, he will love it.
Happy Christmas This movie is hard to describe, it's funny, dramatic and appeals to the victim in all of us. It's the days of being broke and jobless, couch crashing, hooking up with too many guys, drinking too much and pissing off your family, all around the christmas holiday. Watch this with your sister, friends or alone. It's awesome!
Ida This movie is harrowing, dramatic, beautiful and disturbing. It's so incredibly written, filmed and cast, you will never forget Ida. "Anna, a young novitiate nun in 1960s Poland, is on the verge of taking her vows when she discovers a dark family secret dating back to the years of the Nazi occupation."
Je Suis Femen I was waiting for the release of this documentary for so long that I pretty much cried the whole way through it. Oxana Shachko is the heroine of your dreams, and this movie will touch your soul. Watch this with EVERYONE. It is very powerful and will enlighten you about the horrors of being a woman living in Ukraine.
Adult Beginners Nick Kroll, Rose Byrne, need I say more? Hilarious and amazing. "A young, narcissistic entrepreneur crashes and burns on the eve of his company's big launch. With his entire life in total disarray, he leaves Manhattan to move in with his estranged pregnant sister, brother-in-law and 3-year-old nephew in the suburbs - only to become their nanny."
Beloved Sisters This sexy period drama about 2 sisters and a man they fall in love with is gripping and dreamy. Watch this with girlfriends or alone, or with a really sensitive man.
Chef The ultimate feel good, foodie family film. Honestly I was pleasantly surprised by how much I loved this movie, this is a great one to watch with kids and family!! "A chef who loses his restaurant job starts up a food truck in an effort to reclaim his creative promise, while piecing back together his estranged family."
Belle If you haven't seen this movie yet I am jealous of you. It is SO good. This is the ultimate period drama to watch with your girlfriends, I cant even describe how beautiful Gugu Mbatha-Raw is to watch, you want to kiss her the entire time. "BELLE is inspired by the true story of Dido Elizabeth Belle (Gugu Mbatha-Raw), the illegitimate mixed race daughter of a Royal Navy Captain. Raised by her aristocratic great-uncle Lord Mansfield (Tom Wilkinson) and his wife (Emily Watson), Belle's lineage affords her certain privileges, yet the color of her skin prevents her from fully participating in the traditions of her social standing. Left to wonder if she will ever find love, Belle falls for an idealistic young vicar's son bent on change who, with her help, shapes Lord Mansfield's role as Lord Chief Justice to end slavery in England."
Fort Tilden Funny and frustrating, Fort Tilden will have you squirming in your seat, it will also make you question yourself and your bad habbits. These girls are charming and funny but absolutely horrible New York hipsters, spoiled rich college kids down on their luck one summer. Do not watch this if you get annoyed by hipsters easily! "New York City's secluded seaside nirvana where, like flies to honey, Brooklyn's hip millennial set flocks on sweltering weekend afternoons for unbridled summertime indulgence. Amidst the vexing stagnation of quarter-life crises, Allie (Clare McNulty) struggles to prepare for the Peace Corps, while Harper (Bridey Elliot) awaits checks from her father to fund her artistic dreams. But the two friends quickly shun responsibilities for the day when a pair of good-looking guys invites them along for a carefree Fort Tilden afternoon."
Obvious Child This movie made me laugh out loud the whole way through. Watch it. "For aspiring comedian Donna Stern, everyday life as a female twenty-something provides ample material for her relatable brand of humor. On stage, Donna is unapologetically herself, joking about topics as intimate as her sex life and as crude as her day-old underwear. But when Donna winds up unexpectedly pregnant after a one-night stand, she is forced to face the uncomfortable realities of independent womanhood for the first time. Donna's drunken hookup - and epic lapse in prophylactic judgment - turns out to be the beginning of an unplanned journey of self-discovery and empowerment."
Love and Mercy Undeniably one of the most wonderful movies of the year, I'm sure Love and Mercy will win so many awards. It's worth watching for the incredible story, unreal acting and perfect directing. I found the movie so captivating I was pausing and googling it as I watched it. The Beach Boys will win you over again and again! It's dark and sad, yet an enlightening and feel good biopic. "In the 1960s, Beach Boys leader Brian Wilson struggles with emerging psychosis as he attempts to craft his avant-garde pop masterpiece. In the 1980s, he is a broken, confused man under the 24-hour watch of shady therapist Dr. Eugene Landy."
Magic in the Moonlight This has been out for a little while but I wanted to put a newer Woody Allen film on this list! Emma stone is fantastic, the costumes are super inspiring (I am just obsessed with this era) and I found this movie made me wanna be creative. Something about mystics always gets my imagination going!! It's a great one to watch for Halloween also!! "Stanley is a magician who has dedicated his life to revealing fraudulent spiritualists. He plans to quickly uncover the truth behind celebrated spiritualist Sophie and her scheming mother. However, the more time he spends with her, he starts thinking that she might actually be able to communicate with the other world, but even worse, he might be falling in love with her."
McFarland, USA It's cheesy, it's romantic, it's inspiring and compelling- it's Disney at it's best. Honestly I watched this movie on the plane without realizing how touching it would be, I had to try so hard not to cry from happiness during the 5 million touching scenes. Not only that but it's based on a pretty incredible true story. For anyone out there that wants to feel GREAT, watch this movie. It's like Mighty Ducks meets the Blindside meets Kevin Costner. Faves! "Jim White moves his family after losing his last job as a football coach. He sees that some of the students are worth starting a cross country team and turns 7 students with no hope into one of the best cross country teams."
Begin Again As a massive fan of keira Knightley I will watch anything she is in, but this was one seriously touching film. I loved the movie "Once" by the same director so I was excited to see another movie about music starring some of my favorite actors. This movie is delightful and touching, great one to watch with mom or with a friend going through a breakup. "Gretta (Keira Knightley) and her long-time boyfriend Dave (Adam Levine) are college sweethearts and songwriting partners who decamp for New York when he lands a deal with a major label. But the trappings of his new-found fame soon tempt Dave to stray, and a reeling, lovelorn Gretta is left on her own. Her world takes a turn for the better when Dan (Mark Ruffalo), a disgraced record-label exec, stumbles upon her performing on an East Village stage and is immediately captivated by her raw talent. From this chance encounter emerges an enchanting portrait of a mutually transformative collaboration, set to the soundtrack of a summer in New York City."
The One I Love This movie is WEIRD, creepy, romantic and amazing. It's sci fi meets rom com, dreamy madness. Mark Duplass and Elisabeth Moss are magic, once again. Highly recommend it... I wont say anymore because I don't want to ruin the surprise. "Struggling with a marriage on the brink of falling apart, a couple escapes for a weekend in pursuit of their better selves, only to discover an unusual dilemma that awaits them."
People Places Things Hilarious, touching, amazing. This story about a teacher/graphic novelist and his little girls growing up in NYC is truly lovely. It made me laugh again and again... it's an amazing film to watch with just about anyone. "PEOPLE PLACES THINGS tells the story of Will Henry (Jemaine Clement), a newly single graphic novelist father balancing single-parenting his young twin daughters, writers block, a classroom full students, all the while exploring and navigating the rich complexities of new love and letting go of the woman who left him."
The Duff Easy, feel good, funny Highschool movie. I never get sick of these, and this one is definitely a good one. Perfect to watch with your long time friends, this comedy addresses body image, crushes and mean girls really well. "Bianca is a content high school senior whose world is shattered when she learns the student body knows her as 'The DUFF' (Designated Ugly Fat Friend) to her prettier, more popular friends. Now, despite the words of caution from her favorite teacher, she puts aside the potential distraction of her crush, Toby, and enlists Wesley, a slick but charming jock, to help reinvent herself. To save her senior year from turning into a total disaster, Bianca must find the confidence to overthrow the school's ruthless label maker Madison and remind everyone that no matter what people look or act like, we are all someone's DUFF."
