FETE, Champagne for breakfast

You may remember the photos I shot for FETE before, well we are back in the gardens and this time with the beautiful Juju.

I am so happy to share this shoot I did for my friend and colleague, Emily came to intern for me at Wildfox during my favorite years there, and she ended up as my full time assistant. Emily has magic in her fingertips, she went on to create this beautiful line that celebrates the petite girl. It is so her- magic, lace and easy bake ovens. 

Very proud and happy to support such a wonderful woman. Hope you enjoy the photos we created together.

God Save Queens, Welcome to Exile

I was lucky enough to art direct and shoot the latest God Save Queens lingerie campaign, a beautiful polish brand with stunning undies. 

I imagine queens through the ages in their underwear, this one I felt pulled by a 17th century queen, a mistress and a confidant. After becoming vampires they are exiled into the country where they live alone, pining in their underwear, feeding on pet birds and reading Justine by Marquis De Sade over and over again. 

I look forward to more campaigns with God Save Queens in the future, along with more of my own secret projects so keep following for updates!

Kacere

Born: June 23, 1920; Walker, IA

"John Kacere was an abstract painter from 1950 to 1963, but moved to a realistic style; he has been considered a photo-realist or hyper-realist, although he has not adopted the methodology of these schools. Since 1963, he has concentrated on the subject of woman.

Kacere was born in 1920 in Walker, Iowa. He showed artistic ability as a child and did his first professional sign-painting job at age 12. Attending art school in Chicago from 1938 through 1940, he studied commercial art at first. Exposure to fine art at the Art Institute of Chicago and other museums, however, inspired kacere to shift the direction of his own work to the fine arts.

At first, Kacere was especially interested in the work of Van Gogh, Degas and Toulouse-Lautrec. He also cites Holbein and Ingres as favorite artists.

Before he entered the army, Kacere held his first one-man show in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Stationed in California during the war years, he began to study the work of the European moderns:

Picasso, Miro, Klee and Matisse. Upon leaving the army, Kacere studied fine arts at the University of Iowa.

He began his teaching career in 1950 at the Umversity of Manitoba in Winnipeg, Canada. Since then he has taught at the University of Florida, Arizona State University, the Rhode Island School of Design, New York University, the University of New Mexico, and Cooper Union and the Parsons School of Design in New York City.

Kacere does not consider himself a photo-realist, although his highly detailed work is sometimes called photo-or hyper-realistic. Unlike the photo-realist painters, who work from detail to detail of their canvases, Kacere works on all areas of the canvas at the same time and builds up layers of paint.

Despite criticism from feminists, some of whom have labeled his work sexist, Kacere has continued to specialize in paintings of the female body since 1963. "Woman is the source of all life, the source of regeneration," he has said. "My work praises that aspect of womanhood."

Kacere has had many one man shows in New York City. He has also shown in Paris and Hamburg, and his work has been enthusiastically received in Europe. It is held in private collections worldwide. "

Victoria's secrets

 

 

 

Victoria's Secret was founded as a single lingerie boutique near San Francisco California by Roy Raymond in 1977. The Stanford graduate came up with the idea after his awkward experiences shopping for lingerie for his wife.

The very first Victoria's Secret Catalog (see image above) was created in 1978. This was also the only catalog published in that year. In 1979 three catalogs were published and in 1980 six. (This progression continued until the late 90's when there were over 150 different catalogs printed a year.)
 
Over the course of five years, from 1977 to 1982, Roy Raymond expanded operations from one store to six in addition to his small catalog business. Then in 1982 Roy sold Victoria's Secret to Les Wexner, founder and CEO of The Limited Corporation, for 4 million dollars.

Victoria's Secret was later spun off with several other companies from "The Limited Inc." in October 1995 as "Intimate Brands." In March 2002 "The Limited" bought back controlling interest in Intimate Brands and therefore Victoria's Secret. Victoria's Secret remains a subsidiary of Limited Brands Corporation (renamed from The Limited Inc).

Victoria's Secret Catalog is the No 1 catalog of intimate apparel. Victoria's Secret Catalog sales makeup about 5% of the 9 billion domestic women's apparel market.

In 1993, after several failed attempts to start a new business, Victoria's Secret founder Roy Raymond committed suicide by jumping from the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, California.

 

The rise of the Victoria's Secret Catalog as an icon in American Culture paralleled the rise of the "Supermodel". The Victoria's Secret Catalog could even be said to have contributed to the increased celebrity status of models. As Victoria's Secret models such as Jill Goodacre, Frederique Van der Wal were becoming names unto themselves the catalog also became more that just a means of selling underwear.

During the late 80's and early 90's, supermodels Stephanie Seymour, Karen Mulder, Helena Christiansen and a few others presided over what might be considered the Golden Age of the Catalog. It was during this time that catalog production values greatly increased. With new money infused from its wealthy parent company Victoria's Secret upscaled the look and feel of the catalog. Victoria's Secret hired only the world's most beautiful and famous models and paid the world's best photographers to take their pictures. The result were catalogs with photography that was often indistinguishable from the images in expensive art books.

Some supermodels such as Claudia Schiffer, Naomi Cambell, Valaria Mazza, and Josie Maran have made only relatively brief appearances in Victoria's Secret Catalogs. The appearance of some models such as Josie Maran has even been referred to as a myth. The appearance of models like those above in a Victoria's Secret Catalog makes a catalog more collectable and more valuable. An interesting note is that even actresses Gena Davis and Uma Thurman have made appearances in old versions of the catalog.

Given the importance of the Supermodel in the history, success and popularity of the Victoria's Secret Catalog it is also understandable that the particular supermodel on the cover has a direct correlation to the collectable value of that particular issue.
