Laney on the edge

I recently went to NYC where I stayed at the amazing Arlo Hotel and we had a glorious time soaking up all the rain. It is hard in LA when you only see the rain a handful of times a year, especially when it is your favorite weather.

I feel so lucky to photograph one of my favorite new models, Laney DeGrasse, who was as sweet as she is beautiful. My boyfriend held umbrellas as we shot in pink fuzziness looking out over a drizzly New York from the hotel's rooftop.

Since I left Wildfox and started shooting more and more, I realized I need a place to put all these personal photos, so I've started a "magazine" section in my portfolio where I can store them all in a nice way. Enjoy!

Planet Mathilda

starring the effervescent mathilda tolvanen, shot by me for planet blue!!

"Signed last August when she attended an open call at Paparazzi Model Management in Helsinki, Mathilda is one fantastic Finnish find. With her delicately sculptured features, lush mouth and clear innocent blue eyes, Mathilda is a knockout. Last month she visited Paris (during her school vacation) and was signed with IMG Paris. Next stop is probably Japan, where Mathilda’s kind of beauty is so in demand. This will certainly hone her modelling skills, so when the time is right Mathilda will be ready to waltz into the fashion capitals. " -Models.com

Shot in the Arts District with a little bit of a Fifth Element (if she were a painter living in LA) influence, we had a lot of fun! This house is available for rent on AirBNB in the Arts District neighborhood, and it's so pretty!

Amy Judd

"Amy’s paintings are a collection of sensitive silent moments; some full of whimsical intrigue, others more surreal and seductive. These paintings draw inspiration from the enchanting and imaginative relationship between women and nature found in traditional mythologies and folklores.

The composition, light and positioning of the subject, creates curious images, which conjure up new “mythological” narratives or creatures within the paintings. A recurring theme is the use of Feathers as armour, and birds as familiars. The more surreal nude compositions are bold and strong, the feathers allude to strength, flight and bravery, rather than fragility.

However the paintings depicting women with birds (owls) have a calmer atmosphere, the use of negative space in the image lets the viewer breath, the clothes worn by the figures and the muted colour palette create a nostalgic dream like feel to the paintings. In a new twist the female figures are swapped for seamstress mannequins, and the owls like something out of Snow White become the dress makers."

Enchanted... the unicorn of dolls.

This is so spectacular, it's like what I always dreamed of making but never knew how!! Oh dreamy dream dream dolls...

"Marina Bychkova is a Russian-Canadian figurative artist and a founder of Enchanted Doll™- a luxury toy label of exquisite, porcelain dolls.

More than mere playthings, Enchanted Dolls are elegantly sculpted and articulated works of art. Strikingly nude, engraved or adorned in opulent sculptural costumes of precious metals, gemstones, and rare found objects, each doll intricately conveys an aspect of our humanity. Unique and delicate, their forms evoke a strong emotional response, haunting us with their vulnerability. All at once innocent and sexual, Enchanted Dolls depict highly stylized images of femininity, while at the same time reflecting on life’s playful naiveté."

“The reason I love making dolls is because it’s such a multidisciplinary art form. I’m not content working in just one medium such as painting or sculpture, and dolls offer me a very diverse and satisfying tactile experience. To create a doll I get to do it all: sculpture, industrial design, painting, engraving, mold-making, drawing, metalwork, fashion and jewelry design. I want it all, or nothing!”

London-based photographer alexander james has begun releasing images from his 'glass' series - a collection of photographs born from a process
that naturally removes all the pigment from the capillaries in rose petals, developed specially by the artist. james is well known for his underwater imagery,
with this latest series involving a complex technique that over time replaces the flower's coloring with highly purified water,
leaving behind only the skeletal fibre and plant structure visible - all while the plant still lives and grows.
the striking imagery immortalizes the ethereal billowing blooms underwater without the use of post production
the gossamer forms alluding to the richness and fragility of life through the language of nature.

james says of his work:

'I create meticulously crafted sculptural scenes immersed in huge dark tanks of water. for the most part I destroy these creations,
leaving behind only the medium format transparencies as documents of these acts. the introduction of water in this way serves its
purpose both symbolically and as the functional device through which I achieve the painterly effect of these works.

these images are always presented ‘as-shot’ without the use of post production; either traditional or digital.
it is this dedication to in-camera purity that establishes a predominant focal point for my practice.
I want to cross out the boundaries between sculpture, painting and photography; the more obscured they are, the more you will want to explore.

for me the quality of the work and the purity of the process is paramount, distilling elements out with the strong use of deep blacks;
conveying rich layers of meaning in what at first appear deceptively simple images.'
