Atomic girls

My very last Collection for Wildfox! So bittersweet. Some of my favorite pieces here, just incredibly fun and rewarding to create. A lot of these weren't produced so don't be sad when you cant find them.

I was inspired when I visited Eugene, Oregon to see my boyfriends mother, she told me about growing up with her Dad who worked on the Atomic bomb. Their town and family suffered illnesses from this and the story was so compelling it made me want to research the atomic age in America. I wanted to bring this weird point in history to life,

"think plastics, board housewives, robots and funny futuristic interpretations."

The Feeling of summer... WILDFOX 2015

Our summer collection is finally here, and clothing will hit the online store first thing tomorrow morning, WILDFOX.COM and will be getting more and more product over the next 3 months! So cute and easy and so many things to throw on with your friends for a beach trip! I wanted the collection to have the feeling of reading an easy summer beach house novel, with addicting female characters staying at their beach house in the Hamptons, they are 1970’s New Yorkers that Woody Allen would have obsessed about. I also wanted to convey the true feeling of summer, what it is to me; going barefoot down the back path out onto the beach, coming back to the house after a long day in the sun with big easy T shirts and slightly sunburned skin. I love in the summer when you have all your girlfriends in the house and there are wet bikinis strewn in the shower, sunscreens and perfumes all over the sink counters, the smell of bacon at 11am… Dad singing in the kitchen, and just the freedom to do nothing, maybe a little shellfish grocery shopping at the corner market and blasting Frank Sinatra in an old family vacation home. I love in the summer when you’ve been out late with the girls and wake up together in bed, sand all over the sheets, still wearing your bathing suit with just a hoodie on over it. Summer is magic. California has almost a permanent summer and growing up here leaves you with tons of unforgettable beach memories, but what I really love is after the beach… the parents house that you laze around in and call boys for hours to arrange that nights bonfire.

My muses were absolutely Dianne Keaton circa 1970’s, and also my girlfriends in High school who are just stunning and wild… we were unstoppable in the summer.

Honestly I couldn’t sum this up with a paragraph, that’s why I was so compelled to write a short story. I hope you enjoy it!!

I love this version by Michael Buble, I know it's cheesy but it's so feel good summer to me! Play it while you read and look through the images :)

"The initial thing that made me want to go Italian was Slim Aarons photographs. He photographed fabulous people in beautiful places, doing luxurious things. I loved the idea of doing nothing all year long, and I couldn't think of a better place than Italy."

"I’ve always had this obsession with the 90s, and that includes the movie Stealing Beauty. It’s all about the summer of losing her innocence in Italy, very cliché and easy but so fun to watch, it makes you want to be there eating and drinking with someone painting your portrait in the vineyards."

"The Amalfi Coast looks like a dream come true, I imagine girls in the 1960’s racing around in convertibles with big hair being blown in the warm air."

"Elsa Martinelli was a huge Italian icon, I love how she's photographed so frequently on mopeds or scooters. It's like the quintessential Italian thing to do! I knew right away when I saw this photo of her we needed mopeds for our campaign."

29c3c-img.jpg

"With her big, beautiful features, dark hair, pouty mouth, voluptuous body and sexy attitude, Claudia Cardinale was a key ingredient in my inspiration for the designs. Cardinale has been a UNESCO goodwill ambassador for the Defense of Women's Rights since March 2000. In February 2011 the Los Angeles Times Magazine named Cardinale among the 50 most beautiful women in film history, I think she is the ultimate role model for a young girl and I definitely wanted to pay some tribute to her with the "Kiss me Im Italian" Sweater.  "I never felt scandal and confession were necessary to be an actress. I've never revealed my self or even my body in films. Mystery is very important."

"Sophia Loren sets the stage for this collection, everything about her is just delicious. She is truly the face of the Female Italian film industry!"

"Creating a restaurant environment was very important to me, we paid homage to carbs this season, which have recently been getting the cold shoulder with all the gluten free fads. I couldn't think of a better time to bring pasta into our lives, and creating a setting for that with both the show and the campaign was extremely fun. This is the restaurant Im dying to visit... Hotel Caruso. Don't you just wanna die there? Wow!"

Indio Pony

This shoot was so fun for me to do because it gave me the opportunity to pay homage to my own  crazy festival days. I thought I'd share some of my own festival diary entries, they transport me right back to Coachella, Burning Man, Lighting in a Bottle and many more we used to attend. I was with the girls last night watching Kelsey of "Flower Girl Los Angeles" tickle her 1 year old and listening to Cassandra talk about her production for bikini line "Minimale Animale"

"Just any excuse to dress up" Cassandra reminded me as we sipped wine and laughed hysterically, we turned on New Young Pony Club from 2007 and danced in the kitchen as Kelsey loaded the dishwasher.

In your 20's you feel you'll be young forever, you'll always have the opportunity to wear faux fur leg warmers and glitter stickers on your face... but you don't. We grow up and put those things away, and it's a natural transition but a sad moment to realize you are just too old to go crazy with the body paint.

I encourage all of you young and young at heart to let go, free yourself and get out of town. Take on any character you are channeling, become a new girl, present a powerful and outrageous version of yourself... live all the way. I hope Wildfox can always be there for your unique outfits, for the girl you've always wanted to be, for your inspiration. XXX

palm springs and the way a golf cart feels in the dark

Last year during coachella we never made it to the festival we ended up in the house all weekend drunk off margaritas and crawling around on the carpet. At night we took the golf cart out in the pitch black and got soaked by high pressure sprinklers. We laughed we fell in love and we danced.

I sit and think about Palm Springs and feel a rush of anxiety as i imagine walking through the large crowds at Coachella and all the girls are beautiful and the boys are preoccupied or on mushrooms and I remember junior High and thats how it feels to think of the concert. I will lay by a pool with interesting people and we will swim at night in the heat and I will wear my rasta bikini and Chris will probably be there kissing me and he's very cute but I can't seem to let go of something that's holding me back. Something is stopping me from...crushing... from feeling anything.

It's probably Ben Mackenzie. HA.

This year I think it will be quite similar to last year except perhaps a little more glamorous. We will be stopping in at the GQ party and I made a feather necklace to wear to detract from my +++ pale skin. Sexy.
Good luck to me and Emily. And, dear God, dont let us get caught*

*you know what Im referring to God.

boys who play guitar

This afternoon we returned from Coachella worn out of course just a little. I drifted in and out of sleep in the car dreaming of how we sat laughing on top of Ashleys van listening to loud 70's music. I've gotten to that point in a breakup where you completley forget what the person looks like or smells like or sounds like and you aren't sad anymore. But I am full crush proof at this point finding it hard to develop interest in anything except work. I'm thinking this is a good thing. There are just so many silly dorky boys you don't even realize it until youre single enough to see. It's so hot in my room, my shirt is sticking to my back and it is gross. The graveyard movies start again this weekend, they always mark the beginning of summer the beginning of new things and happiness and swimming and smiles mark the beginning of boys who play guitar. I hope I meet a boy who shoots archery this summer and takes lots of photos and likes to watch the discovery channel or animal planet. I wouldn't mind shooting arrows and maybe going for a swim in a lake. That would be nice. I want to lose 10 pounds but i think wanting that is a little ridiculous like paris hilton wanting a more expensive car sort of thing. Im happy with what I have. I miss Kelsey.

My mother isn't moving Im over joyed!

Ashley and Adarsha and I sat up front of his van hauling down the open road in Palm Springs. Ashley lost Jael at the concert with all the shit but he had her ticket. She was getting recognized too much and was wearing a wig and we ran all over looking for her but were not lucky enough to find her.

Adarsha showed me many sides I'd never seen and I enjoyed them all and Petecia did a funny dance in front of me at the air show. Pantea let me sleep on their circle couch.

I miss work. Im glad to be home. I love my friends. I love you all I had the BEST weekend.

bring on the boys and their instruments I SO need to kiss lots of them.

Here is my inspiration behind it all

What is the inspiration of this new collection?

What is the inspiration of this new collection?

This past year was quite a turbulent one for me, and it seems maybe for the world also! I think I had this overall feeling of wanting to escape and live off the land, I visualized a group of girls with a whole lot of passion and fearlessness and absolutely nothing to lose. They would beg, borrow, steal their way through countries, hypnotizing boys and working odd jobs to make a little money. Their lives were only for each other and themselves, there was a freedom in the collection, a way for me to feel it along with them even though I worked harder than ever to bring it to life!

Who are your ideal muses for this collection (from any era)?

When I was 23 I would go to tons of festivals, really hippy ones, and I made these fleeting friendships that were fast but have been so important to me in my lifetime. These girls were so free, one was a nudist and she had beautiful long blonde hair and we did lots of body painting on people together, one was this fantastic artist who wore just thrown together scraps of printed clothing she'd collected along her life path, she had natural dreadlocks that formed under her hair and she wore them in a bun. Another was an Indian belly dancer at Burning Man, a dancer by night but an engineer by day… she was bold and beautiful without a touch of makeup, but she wore great coal liner when she danced, two opposite identities at peace with each other.

What made you identify with and/or choose this concept?

There is something so carefree about your early 20s, and I just missed this feeling of electricity, about being able to run off at the last minute, quit your job and not look back… or just take a risk with something big, your 30's you carry evidence of your 20s… like beautiful, luxurious baggage, I love my baggage and I wanted to give a nod to it with this collection.

If you could sum up the Spring 15 collection in one word, song, or destination what would it be?

Honestly Shakira's "I'm a gypsy" while I was driving on a road trip was what sparked the whole thing, which is silly but I friggin love that song.

Provide three adjectives that best describe Spring 15:

Free, spiritual, bold

Name three staple styles from this collection you would recommend to the Wildfox customer:

I love the friendship tees (Like the eat, pray, love ones) and the mismatched prints the most! I also love the white label pieces, they are so traveling girl!

What is your personal favorite piece in this collection and why?

The White label poncho, because I would have worn that to every festival ever. These girls are the new Coachella… the new glastonbury… this is definitely a festival collection.

Barbie Loves Wildfox

Well, my childhood dream came true, and here it is.

From LA weekly:

  • Wildfox's new Barbie line is the perfect thing to wear while nursing that hangover.

In the midst of a serious Barbie backlash, one L.A. fashion designer is taking Barbie's side — by attempting to bring back her pastel-colored, jazzercise-ready wardrobe of the early 1990s.

The new fashion collection, designed by the West Hollywood-based women's brandWildfox, is called "Welcome to the Dreamhouse: At Home with Barbie," and it looks exactly like what you'd imagine: star-spangled leotards, mesh sweatshirts paired with acid-wash jeans, turquoise bike shorts with leg warmers and plenty of pink sweatsuits and swimsuits for every occasion. And yes, they're made to fit life-size, adult women.

Wildfox co-founder and creative director Kimberley Gordon says Mattel proposed the collaboration in an attempt to re-vamp Barbie's image and "get people our age thinking about it and make her cool." It's one of several recent Barbie fashion collaborations, including a line of Barbie tops and sweaters from Forever 21, a line of nightgowns and sleepwear from the New York-based retailer Lord & Taylor, and Jeremy Scott's high-fashion Moschino collection, which hit the runway at Milan Fashion Week in September with lots of blonde bouffants, bubblegum-pink rompers and polka-dotted prom dresses.

"I know there's so much controversy around her being a bad role model," says Wildfox's Gordon, a blonde 31-year-old who fondly remembers designing her Barbie dolls' taped-together outfits out of toilet paper. "I don't remember being a little girl and thinking about her body. I just remember her long blonde hair or the long black hair and the cute little smile and just having tiny clothes." The new Wildfox fashion line is intended as a reminder of that nostalgia, "about that time period that was so fun, and all about dress up."

But can fun adolescent dress-up translate to modern women's wear in 2014? Sure, if you're the type of woman who has the distinct privilege of spending her days climbing the Stair Master, juicing cucumbers, sipping cocktails by the pool or lounging in a jacuzzi with her BFF. These are all scenes from the "Welcome to the Dreamhouse: At Home with Barbie" fashion shoot, which features a model that could be mistaken for Malibu Barbie and another that looks exactly like Tyra Banks in the 2000 movie Life-Size, in which Banks plays a doll, fittingly enough.

While Moschino's Barbie-inspired line featured big-shouldered party dresses and sequined ball gowns, Wildfox's line is readymade for L.A. lounging.

"Barbie's done everything. She's a doctor, she's a lawyer," says Gordon. "She's a go-getter." And yes, sometimes she even gets hungover and just needs to lounge in her sweats like the rest of us.

To illustrate Barbie's "billion different jobs," Gordon designed a Wildfox t-shirt with Barbie's resume printed on the back.

I played with Barbie until I was, like, 14 so this was incredibly fun and incredibly STRESSFUL! I felt so much pressure to cast this perfectly, design and style it, to get a more realistic dream house, like where they really might have lived in the early 90's (my favorite era of Barbie) and what they really might have owned! This was my task, real life Barbie! When I went to Mattel to meet the team I was overwhelmed with happiness!

One of the most fun things at Mattel is they say, "Everybody has a Barbie story" and it's totally true! I have about 100, I mean from my brothers obsession with my Barbie, to sexual explorations between Barbie characters, Barbie's trips to the "pool"... but now my Barbie story is this, and I am humbled and incredibly lucky to tell it!!

Please tell me and everyone in the comments,

What is your Barbie Story??

(Don't hold back.)

Lizzie, WILDFOX F 14 White Label

Hello everyone! I've been SO busy I haven't had time for updates. Starting next week there will be a lot more!

I'm so happy to share this White Label shoot of our modern day Elizabeth Bennet, I had so much fun capturing the beautiful Charlbi and directing her as the romantic tomboy star of Jane Austen's 'Pride and Prejudice', she's just so inspiring and dreamy! I imagined Elizabeth today would have lopped off all that long hair to be more practical as she picnicked in Griffith Park, or hiked through the canyons of Malibu. Lizzie is the ultimate heroine, and quite a role model. We could all take a bit of a lesson from her story, to know when we are wrong, to know when we are silly, and to not judge a book by it's cover... you never know when you might be hanging out with your own Mr. Darcy.

New perfectly fit beanies, sweaters, cardi's, and dreamy outfits for all sorts of weather.

Enjoy!

Sense & Eccentricity, WILDFOX Fall 2014

Hey Everyone! I'm back from Miami swim week and couldn't be more excited to post our FALL 14 campaign!!! This was so crazy to shoot out in the freezing snow and right after a storm. I am so excited for fall to come again this year, cozy nights playing board games and drinking hot chocolate...

This collection is very much inspired by Jane Austen and my English heritage. I loved growing up in West Sussex, even today I love to be in a place where you can really feel the seasons change. Jane Austen wrote love stories around seasons, she was one of the first young women to become famous for her beautiful, romantic novels about coming of age and trying to find your place in the world. She is one of the most widely read writers in English literature.

In my eyes Jane was the ultimate Wildfox girl; Hard working, poetic, confidant and extremely comical... and  it makes me sad she couldn't be alive today so I could have her over for dinner and a sleep over with all the girls.

Her stories are inspiring and still so relevant, they teach us about ourselves, our friendships, family, priorities and sacrifice. Growing up with an older sister I really looked up to her, she was my ultimate inspiration,  my eccentric, funny, drinking, laughing, hard working, incredibly cool role model. She gave me so many of the building blocks to become confidant and independent, to make comedy even in the hardest of times. She lives in England, in Brighton, a city by the sea, and I rarely get to see her so It's a bittersweet relationship that I think about often.

Siblings, whether they are blood or self made, are such an important part of growing up, of who you are and who you become.

Thus this collection is a dedication to the women who love us most, hate us most, forgive us most, to the women who make us laugh and cry, who give us that reality dose straight to the face, who keep us in line but also teach us to miss-behave... this collection is for them, for our sisters and for the ultimate sister,

                                                Jane Austen.
